Greg Hinson, of Hamlet, is helping his friend and coworker Willard Haynes fight colon cancer by holding a corn hole tournament on Feb. 23 at the Church of God of Prophecy at 139 Flowers St., Rockingham.
Haynes was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2007 and has been in and out of remission since then. He said he has had a portion of his liver removed, a portion of his colon removed, three sets of chemotherapy and three sets of radiation since he was diagnosed.
His cancer came out of remission most recently in June 2012. Haynes, who works for CSX Railroad in Hamlet as a car inspector, said that the sick benefits he received from CSX ran out in January. His doctor, an oncologist in Laurinburg, told him he can’t go back to work so he is hoping to receive permanent disability within the next couple of weeks. Haynes has been out of work for six months.
“I felt like I needed to do something for him,” said Hinson, who has known Haynes for more than two years.
The fundraiser is a group effort from Haynes’ fellow coworkers, with Hinson being at the forefront. The group call themselves and their efforts Friends for a Friend.
Haynes has four children ages 31, 30, 16 and 9 and has been married to Marilou Haynes for 18 years.
Registration for the tournament will start at 9:45 a.m. and the tournament will begin at 10:30 a.m. There will be two people per team, and it costs $40 for each team to play. There will be a cash prize; first place will get $200, second place will get $100 and third place will get $50. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.
