ROCKINGHAM — Richmond Senior didn’t have an answer for Jack Britt quarterback Mark McRae in the second half.

The senior connected on his final 11 passes on the night, including the game-winning 32-yard bomb to Jalen McDaniel with 25 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Buccaneers to a 56-52 victory over the Raiders Friday night.

Jack Britt will take on Garner next week in the East Region title game. The Trojans knocked off Leesville Road 56-35.

McRae finished the game 21 of 26 for 345 yards with five touchdowns. He added another 80 yards on the ground and two scores.

“They made the plays and we didn’t,” Richmond defensive coordinator James Johnson said. “Not just on the final touchdown but all night.”

Jack Britt needed McRae’s heroics after the Raiders took the lead on Brandon Greene’s 29-yard field goal with 1:42 remaining in the game following a 1-yard punt. Richmond started the possession at the Buccaneer 16. An illegal procedure penalty pushed the Raiders back five yards and were unable to get a first down after two runs and pass.

Richmond coach Paul Hoggard thought settling for the field goal was the turning point in the contest.

“We had been moving the ball up-and-down the field on them in the second half,” Hoggard said. “We get the ball in great field position and we end up getting a field goal instead of a touchdown. That ended up making the difference in the game. Plus we didn’t take as much time off the clock as we would have liked.”

The ensuing Jack Britt possession started their own 32. McRae hooked up with Edmund Grant for an 8-yard pass. Eric Carter ran for a short gain, prompting the Buccaneers to call a timeout. McRae hit Sean MacLain on a screen pass for a 9-yard pickup before completing an 11-yard pass to McDaniel to move the ball into Richmond territory.

McRae attempt a quarterback keeper on the next play, but was brought down for a 3-yard loss, forcing Jack Britt to burn its final timeout. McRae found McDaniel for a 12-yard pass on the left sideline to set up the go-ahead touchdown on the next snap.

After the game’s final touchdown, the Raiders tried for one final bit of magic to stay perfect against the Buccaneers. Dakwa Nichols returned the kickoff 30 yards to the Richmond 47. After a 7-yard run by Nichols, Brent Flowers connected with Raheem Bowden for a 19-yard pass to move the ball to the Jack Britt 27 with 3.4 seconds remaining in the contest. On the final play of the game, Flowers lofted a pass into the end zone looking for Trent Bostick, but Cedric Williams knocked the ball to the ground.

Allowing the Buccaneers to advance in the playoffs and defeat the Raiders for the first time in 10 tries.

Nichols finished his Richmond career with 177 yards on 11 carries and three touchdowns. Flowers rushed for 171 yards on 18 attempts and three scores, while Diquon Cox ran for 96 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

The Raiders ran for 444 yards against a defense which had allowed an average of just under 10 points a game in its last four contests.

“That offense really spreads you out and puts pressure on you,” Jack Britt defensive coordinator Garron Warwick said.

Richmond finishes its season with an 11-2 record.

This coaching staff is getting paid to have a top notch program that is worthy of the support that Raider fans can give. Anyone who thinks that the Raider program has done anything but regress since 1999 needs to have a reality check. Attendance is down across the board. The fans have all but stopped traveling like they had been. The Raiders have ceased to be in the conversation when it comes to high school football. The talk about all the staff does for players off the football field is nothing but a straw man designed to try and take attention away from the fact that the program is failing. Fans see these teams become unfocused and failing to get better as the season progresses. All you have to do is look at the headlines in the journal once the conference season starts and you see it all. This is what we have seen for the last 4 seasons. No amount of talent level seems to make any difference. These guys have done all they are going to do going forward and it's time for a change!

It's always good to have a scots fan come on here and tell us what we should settle for. They seem to have gotten all high and mighty on us. They seem to have forgotten all the seasons of whining and threatening their coach M.B. they've forgotten about the locker room fighting that went on down there. They have even forgotten about wanting the head of their 1st year coach from New Bern after his initial season. Now they want to tell Raider fans how happy we should be after another failed season. I say failed in this respect, this raider team like the teams before it continually regressed as the season went on and struggled with mediocre opponents before bowing out in ridiculous fashion. As a serious Raider fan I could care less what other schools will accept. The only people who spout that mess about Raider fans thinking they are going to win the state every year are fans from other teams sticking their noses where they don't belong. No one in their right mind would think these coaches could do such a thing. If I was a coach or a fan from another school I would love for the Raiders to be stuck with this outfit coaching them. These guys aren't a threat to do anything but an incompetent job for the foreseeable future. No one is bringing the program down but the current leadership. In closing I would suggest to the scots fans one bit of advice. Pride goeth before the fall, so ease up on the arrogance.

What I said yesterday was not with arrogance... yes Im a Scot, but I (along with alot of other Scots) were pulling for the Raiders. I would have love to have seen Scotland winning the 4A and Richmond winning the 4AA...you see Mr. "Real Coach" there is something even larger than Scotland and Richmond and its the SEC. As far as sticking my nose in Raider business, hey just trying to give a little advice, I mean Scotland has been in the same spot the Raiders are now for a looooong time so who would know it better. The difference between Scotland and Richmond is the community stood behind our high school, playoff no playoff, winning season no winning season, ring or no ring; and Ill take PRIDE in that over any ring any day.

God Bless.

...."Real Coach"....get over it!....Coach Hoggard isn't going anywhere...the adminstartion is behind him 100%.....I suggest you take some self- inventory and maybe try and understand the bigger picture of just what Coach Hoggard means to the Raider program....nah...I doubt you would get the scope of just how much he contributes to the life's of the student/players he coaches....

Ok guys its time to put your big boy draws on... 11-2 is not a bad season (most schools would kill for that record)... LETS BE REAL FOR 5 SECONDS,your not going to win state every year (YES! even if you are Richmond)... I think the Richmond fans are a bit spoiled... your so use to spanking everyone else that you forgot what a spanking feels like. You guys have a great coach, and program at Richmond... suck it up and come harder next year. You shouldnt put your program down so bad.

Well, Its time to write the epitaph for this season. It smells a lot like what we've seen for the last 4 years " Funky ". The days of being aggressive and playing to win " Gone ". The days of assembling and putting the best players you have into a dominating defense " Never Will Be Seen Again ". Since 1999 forward the Raider Program has been in an absolute spiral downward. Where other teams used to fear us, now they look to use us as stepping stones. Where there was Raider Pride, now we have fans who are happy to win 8 or 9 games in the regular season. If they are happy with being mediocre, that is all that they will get. There is a reason that the playoff crowds were way down and the enthusiasm level is nowhere near what it used to be. True Raider fans don't like what they are seeing on Friday nights. They don't like seeing teams that get worse as the season goes on. They don't like seeing the defense giving up unheard of numbers of TD's. They don't like having to hold their breaths after every play, looking for penalty flags. Finally they don't like hearing excuses such as " Lack Of Talent " or the new favorite " Kids Didn't Make Plays ". One of Two things need to happen. Changes to team leadership or just admit that the powers that be aren't wanting a top of the line program anymore. If the latter is the case then i'm sure a lot of fans will stop wasting their time!

Well folks, this is going to be the norm for Raider football going forward. The playcalling we got at the 16 was done to set up for the field goal. This was a timid move done by timid coaches. The vaunted Raider defenses of the past would be horrified at the spectacle that was presented last night. It was humiliating and left fans wondering what in the world was going on. 345 yards in the air, 80 yards rushing, 7 TDs. All this by a team that could only muster 17 points against a mediocre Hoke defense. As I have said before, " Raider Fans Are In The Twilight Zone ". This will not stop unless changes are made. Fan support is on the decline and was very weak for a third round game. If these coaches need to be asked to leave, let me be the first. " LEAVE! ".

Drove 140 miles round trip to witness the worst game plan in the history of Raider football. I was not among the fans wanting the coach to depart but, that was before this sorry excuse for a game plan was put into motion. The fans are baffled by the defensive calls made in this game and others. This loss belongs to the coaches and them alone.

Tsk. Tsk. Pass Defense.... Let the finger pointing begin. Lets hear it Realcoach. Seems like your the only who welcomes the truth about this program.

Its the players fault for not making plays. Really James Johnson? What was the defensive gameplan?

The coached didn't make the adjustments, watching the bench not discipline, those kids deserve better coaching. Saw the some coaches exchange a few words briefly. Richmond was the better team, but not coached right. Solution, defense all but stop the run, pull into secondary maybe Holiday or replace a LB with another DB, drop into a prevent defense, give up ten or fifteen yards, with so little time left. We would be going to the next round. Same play no adjustments, that is the coaches area. Last series of plays for Raiders, bad calling let the RB's handle the ball, they couldn't stop them at all last night.
