John William ‘Bill’ McRae, 79, of Rockingham, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, in FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services with full military honors will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, in the McRae family cemetery in Mt. Gilead.
McRae was born in Richmond County on Oct. 4, 1933, to the late Oscar and Beulah Harris McRae. He retired as Sgt. 1st Class from the U.S. Army, and went on to work as a police officer in Aberdeen, and was a member of the West End Post of the American Legion. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Farrell McRae, and four sisters, Mary Dunn, Mott Baron, Grace Hogge, and Dorothy Morgan.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Avant McRae; three sons, Billy McRae of Jackson Springs, Jimmy McRae of Aberdeen, Jerry McRae of Carthage; three daughters, Nita Watson of Nashville, Tenn., Debbie McRae Norwood of Hamlet, Teresa McRae Wheeler of Durham; three stepdaughters, Angela Cagle of Rockingham, Rhonda Whitlock of Ellerbe, Kelli Jones of Cary; two brothers, Robert McRae of Columbus, Miss., Leon McRae of Rockingham; a sister, Nellie Dunn of West End; 21 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Richmond County Hospice 1119 N. US Hwy 1, Rockingham, NC 28379.
