Dear Editor,

While we bring in the new year, I wonder if folks are prepared for a 14 percent increase in their electric bill.

As a Progress Energy customer in Western North Carolina, I am worried about the proposed rate hikes that could have a serious effect on low income households, schools, neighbors, small businesses and others.

I hope Progress Energy customers across our state will jump at the opportunity to speak out at a public hearing in their area. Rockingham’s Public Hearing will be Feb. 20, 2013 at the Richmond County Courthouse at 7 p.m.

I got my bill from Progress Energy last mth and my bill went from nov at $102 to Dec at $240...no changes in my way of living, temp set at 72 all day and night, so I read the enclosed pamphlet and it stated there was an increase in the rates approved by the NC Utililities Commission and I was charged part of the old rate and the rest at the new rate. This economy is killing me as it is, how does the energy company expect me to pay over double for the same service as the previous mth? This is insane! I can only say they wont be getting paid on time this mth due to their increase in my rate...and Ive never been late on my bill. Something needs to be done seriously.
