To the editor:

I would like to echo the remarks from a reader about the roads in the county (Letter: “Trash litters Hamlet highway,” Feb. 5.)

The Marine Corps League has adopted a 2.2-mile stretch of Battley Dairy Road. In the most recent cleanup, we picked up 20 bags of trash, three tires and a complete bedroom set including mattresses dumped in the creek. It should be noted that the areas directly in front of homes were relatively clean.

After the cleanup, I took N.C. 177 into Hamlet, up through Rockingham to Ledbetter to Green Lake Church into Ellerbe. All roads looked like trash dumps. What’s wrong with holding the trash in your car until you find a proper receptacle?
