ROCKINGHAM — Reaching the semifinals was good enough to allow Rockingham Blue to move on.
The Rockingham Blue Pony League Pinto team took third in last month’s Piedmont Section and qualified for the Super Pinto East Zone tournament beginning tonight in High Point.
Rockingham Blue will face Suffolk Youth Nationals at 7:30 p.m. today. Suffolk Youth Nationals took second in the Northeast Section. The winner will take on Garner at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Garner won the Piedmont Section, defeating West Raleigh in the championship contest. En route to winning the title, Garner handed both Rockingham Blue and Rockingham Orange their first losses in the Piedmont Section.
In addition to those three teams, another nine will be completing this weekend.
West Raleigh will square off with Huntsville at 6 p.m. today. Huntsville finished second in the West Section. The winner will play Western Branch Gold, the Northeast Section champion, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
High Point and CBC National will battle at 6 p.m. today. High Point qualified as the host team, while CBC National advanced after taking second in the North Central Section. Summerfield Red will await the winner at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Summerfield Red captured the South Section crown.
The other opening round game features Summerfield Blue against Jamestown at 6 p.m. today. Summerfield Blue won the West Section. The winner will take on CBC American, the North Central Section champion, at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Bronco games rained out
ROCKINGHAM — The Pony League Bronco Piedmont Section tournament took a day off thanks to Mother Nature.
The showdown between the two undefeated teams — Garner and West Raleigh — was postponed because of rain. The game is now scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday. The loser will square off with Southwest Randolph in an elimination contest at 7 p.m.
The championship game has been pushed back to 10 a.m. Saturday.
Pony team rallies
HIGH POINT — The Rockingham Pony team was trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the first to Henry County 2 in an elimination game when rain caused the contest to be delayed.
Rockingham avoided elimination by rallying for a 9-5 victory Thursday night.
Rockingham will face the loser of the Henry County 1 and Huntsville contest at 8 p.m. Friday.
