GARNER — The Rockingham Blue’s hopes of capturing the Pony League Piedmont Section tournament championship in Garner were dashed Sunday afternoon.
Rockingham Blue lost to West Raleigh 11-8 victory and were eliminated. West Raleigh stopped Garner 17-7 to force a decisive winner-take-all contest. Garner rebounded to pull out a 12-2 win over West Raleigh to win the section title.
Despite finishing third in the section, Rockingham Blue will advance to the East Zone tournament beginning July 11 in High Point. The tentative schedule has Rockingham Blue facing the No. 2 team from the Northeast Section at 7:30 p.m. July 11. The winner will square off with Garner at 9:30 a.m. July 12.
The Northeast Section’s tournament is currently being held in Virginia.
Rockingham Blue wasn’t the only representative from Richmond County at the Piedmont Section. Rockingham Orange went 1-2 in the tournament. After opening with a win over Jamestown, Rockingham Orange lost to Garner to drop into the loser’s bracket.
High Point edged Rockingham Orange 8-6 in an elimination matchup Saturday afternoon.
Brackets released for Dixie Softball state tourney
EDEN — The brackets for the upcoming Angels and Belles Dixie Softball state tournament are out.
The Rockingham Angels all-star team will open play against Bessemer City at 11 a.m. Saturday in Eden. The winner will square off with the victor of the Eden-Montgomery County match at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The losers of the two opening games will face off in an elimination game at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
In addition to those four teams, also qualifying for the state tournament are Garner, Dunn, Fuquay-Varina, Bethany, Reidsville and Hope Mills.
In the Belles tournament, the Rockingham all-stars will take on Moore County at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the tournament opener for both squads. The winner will face either Burgaw or Cherryville 3 p.m. Sunday. The losers of the first games will battle in an elimination game at noon Sunday.
Reidsville, West Brunswick, Eden and Garner are the other squads that will be fighting for the state title.
