Hamlet Middle School eighth-grader Latasha A. Baker has won the fifth- through eighth-grade division of the School Nutrition Association of North Carolina’s Nutrition Advisory Council art contest.

Each winner receives a $50 gift card, a framed copy of their winning picture and a certificate of achievement. Latasha was also invited to the association’s state conference in Greensboro, which will be held on Wednesday.

Nutrition advisory councils were formed in 1973 based on the idea that students should have an active role in their school nutrition programs. Advisory councils across the country have given students a voice and a platform to improve health and nutrition in their schools.

While the formal program sponsored by the School Nutrition Association was discontinued in 2003, the association still encourages schools to continue forming local advisory councils.

Student advisory council members work to affect healthy changes in their schools. They are nutrition ambassadors in their schools, working to increase daily consumption of fruits and vegetables, and increase physical activity among their peers.
