CANDOR — Twenty-one-year-old Zachary Dale Goforth was hanging out with his brother and friend on Sunday when their early morning four-wheeler ride turned deadly.
The young men were riding all-terrain vehicles on County Line Road near the Montgomery-Richmond county line when Goforth sustained severe injuries.
According to State Highway Patrolman N.J. Talley, the crash occurred at 3:57 a.m. on the dirt portion of County Line Road. Talley said dust from the other four-wheeler in front of him blinded Goforth, who ran off the road, struck a ditch and overturned, throwing Goforth off the ATV.
Goforth was unconscious when paramedics arrived on scene. He was taken to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst and was later moved to University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where he died a short time later.
Goforth’s friend, Herbert Robinson, was riding with Goforth at the time of the crash. He reported that when Goforth realized he was going to wreck, he pushed him off the four-wheeler to save him from injury.
