HAMLET — Sheriff’s deputies say a burglar alarm led them to marijuana plants growing outside a Richmond County home on Tuesday.

Richmond County deputies arrested 31-year-old Tammy Ruth Ramirez and 29-year-old Thomas Terry III after they were called to the couple’s house on Boyd Lake Road outside Hamlet. Deputies were checking around the home for signs of an intruder when they found several marijuana plants growing in the backyard, sheriff’s Capt. Jay Childers said.

Neither Ramirez nor Terry has criminal convictions in North Carolina, according to the N.C. Division of Adult Correction.

Both face one count each of manufacturing marijuana, possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana and maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance.

Ramirez was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $3,000 secured bond and received a $173.10 cash bond on a misdemeanor arrest warrant from Cabarrus County, according to the sheriff’s office. Terry was jailed on a $3,000 secured bond.
