“When the lightning hit, it split the tree all the way down to the bottom,” Rippy said.


Richmond County was under a hazardous weather outlook as scattered showers and isolated severe thunderstorms swept through a 26-county swath in eastern and central North Carolina, according to the National Weather Service.
