ROCKINGHAM — Dr. Rasheed Yakubu, an obstetrician and gynecologist with FirstHealth Richmond Medical Group’s Women’s Center, died on Monday, hospital officials said.
Yakubu joined the Rockingham medical practice in May 2012.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his friends and those who had the privilege to work with him since he came to our community,” FirstHealth Physician Group President Dr. Dan Barnes said in a Tuesday memo to company staff.
Yakubu is survived by his wife, Rachelle, one son, Rakeem, and two daughters, Rehanna and Rania.
Hospital officials did not say what caused Yakubu’s death. Barnes said funeral arrangements would be shared with FirstHealth staff when the information becomes available.
A native of Nigeria, Yakubu earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida in Tampa and graduated from the St. Georges University School of Medicine in Grenada in 2004.
Before coming to Richmond County, Yakubu worked with the Women’s Care Center in Huntersville for three years.
FirstHealth officials said the Women’s Center’s other health care providers, Dr. Mohamed A.Y. Ibrahim, Dr. Donald C. Jones and women’s health nurse practitioner Laura Marks would be available to see Yakubu’s patients.
“The other three providers in the Women’s Center…with support from other FirstHealth resources are committed to ensuring that Dr. Yakubu’s patients continue to receive the excellent level of care he provided,” Barnes said in the staff memo.
