ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County remains under flood advisories as a chain of Southeast storms dump inches of rain on the Sandhills this weekend.

A flash flood watch issued Friday night for nearly a third of North Carolina’s 100 counties is in effect until Sunday night. Residents could see flooded streets and creeks and streams washing over their banks.

“Moderate to heavy rain will overspread central North Carolina tonight as an upper-level low stalled over the Deep South continues to pull abundant moisture into the Carolinas,” the National Weather Service’s Raleigh forecast office said in the advisory.

The rain is expected to bring sustained winds of 10-20 mph with gusts topping 35 mph, according to the weather service.

A flash flood warning for Richmond, Anson, Montgomery, Moore and Stanly counties was set to expire at 4 a.m. Saturday. The warning was issued after law enforcement in Richmond County received reports of rising water on the roads, the NWS said.

A Moore County creek flooded its banks in Aberdeen, and streams and creeks throughout the region were at risk of flooding.
