HAMLET — A young felon is accused of stealing vehicles from a local car dealership earlier in the year.

According to warrants, 21-year-old Demetrius Lamar Hunter, of West Avenue in Hamlet, stole three vehicles — a 2015 Toyota Camry, a 2012 Dodge Journey and a 2015 Dodge Dart — belonging to Griffin Toyota between Jan. 4 and Feb. 28.

The warrants were issued on July 14 to Detective Lt. Heather Wyatt of the Hamlet Police Department.

Hunter, whose alias is listed as “D-Man,” was arrested Tuesday on Spring Street and charged with three felony counts of larceny of a motor vehicle. He was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $15,000 secured bond.

As of Friday evening, Hunter was still in jail. He is scheduled to appear in Richmond County District Court on Oct. 29.

Online court records show Hunter has no other pending charges.

Hunter spent nearly 25 months in prison after being convicted on two felony charges, according to the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.

In 2012, he was found guilty of robbery with a dangerous weapon and second-degree kidnapping, stemming from an incident the year before.

Hunter was on parole from his prison release on Aug. 9, 2014 until May 6 of this year, which means he was still on parole when he is alleged to have stolen the vehicles.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
