ROCKINGHAM — A felon is facing charges of assault and property damage following an incident earlier this month.

Jerrid Daran Cade, 34, is accused of knocking out Steven Thomas Langley of Dixieland Drive, north of Rockingham, on Sept. 6, according to an arrest warrant taken out by the alleged victim.

Cade is also charged with grabbing an 8-year-old girl by the hair and pushing her, according to a second warrant that lists the child’s mother as the complainant. While at the home, Cade allegedly damaged dishes, glassware, light fixtures and a kitchen table.

He was arrested by a Richmond County sheriff’s deputy Wednesday and charged with one misdemeanor count each of simple assault, assault on a child under 12 and injury to personal property. Cade was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $1,000 secured bond, but released on bail the same night.

Included the conditions of release, Cade is to have no contact with Langley, the child or her mother. His court date is scheduled for Sept. 25.

Court documents list addresses for Cade on both Craddock Circle in Rockingham and Oak Ridge Church Road in Hamlet.

Cade spent more than six months — from September 1999 to April 2000 — behind bars after having his probation revoked from a 1997 felony larceny conviction in Onslow County, according to the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.

In 2001, he received probation following a conviction on a felony charge of taking indecent liberties with a child in Richmond County. However, state records show Cade is not a registered sex offender.

His most recent conviction in the county was for maintaining any place for a controlled substance in 2005. He also received probation in that case.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
