Democrat Thad Ussery has joined the race for a seat on the Richmond County Board of Commissioners.

Ussery, 76, will be running for his sixth term on the board. The seat is a four-year term and the salary is $9,528 a year.

Ussery has been on the board for 20 years. He remembers back in the ’90s when the county looked bleak due to the loss of the textile mills. Since then the board has been laying the ground work to help grow this county once again, and the county is finally seeing the fruits of that work.

Ussery wants to continue to work to bring a good quality of life to the county and jobs. Ussery has a heart to support the training of new skilled workers. Ussery said that the technical degree growth at Richmond Community College has really assisted the county in providing jobs, and he wants to continue with that work.

“I appreciate the voters for supporting me over these last five terms,” Ussery said. “I enjoy serving with the current board, and I would like to continue working for the county.”

Ussery will be going up against incumbent Democrat Don Bryant, Republican incumbent Ben Moss, former commissioner Democrat Peggy Covington, who served on the board from 2008 to 2012, Democrat Herbert Long and Republican Donnie Richardson.

The filing deadline for candidates is noon on Feb. 28.
