Corey Brewington, council

What do you bring to the table that you believe the council has been lacking?

Community awareness and explanations of changes that could and would affect the town.

What three major changes would you propose to policies, events or infrastructure?

I’ll give one: create and enforce building codes.

Provide an example of a time when you demonstrated leadership?

We orchestrated and teamed up with Sandhills Food Bank of North Carolina to become a food pantry to the community and give out food to help those in need.

How do you plan to make sure the taxpayers’ money is spent wisely?

Look at every option open to make sure this will be the best decision to suite everyone’s need as a whole.

Evon Craven, council

What do you bring to the table that you believe the council has been lacking?

I’m over the streets and sidewalks, and that is what I take care of. I don’t do the actual work, but I tell those that do the work what needs to be done. I am also a go between with the police force and the sheriff’s office here in Ellerbe.

What three major changes would you propose to policies, events or infrastructure?

On the streets and sidewalks we keep those up and repaired, and I don’t know anything that we can change there.

Provide an example of a time when you demonstrated leadership?

I have been on the council for 14 years. We meet once a month to discuss anything involving the city. Many things need an okay from the council before you can actually do them. If there is something you need to do, if it costs less than $1000 than you can go ahead and do it, but if it costs more the council has to okay it.

How do you plan to make sure the taxpayers’ money is spent wisely?

The council monitors that, and we all have to agree on it, so we keep the best interest of the people in mind. If we don’t need it, we don’t do it.

Elsie Freeman, council

What do you bring to the table that you believe the council has been lacking?

I will attend all town council meetings and serve faithfully on all committees that I am assigned to.

What three major changes would you propose to policies, events or infrastructure?

I will be a new member to the town council and I have not been exposed to the policies, events or infrastructure of the existing town council.

Provide an example of a time when you demonstrated leadership?

During my 21 years of employment at Carolina Power and Light, I lead many projects. The project that I lead that would be most visible to Daily Journal readers is the format and wording of Carolina Power and Light electric bills.

How do you plan to make sure the taxpayers’ money is spent wisely?

Since I am a taxpaying Ellerbe resident, it is as important to me as it is to the other taxpayers to spend the town’s money wisely.

Lee Berry, mayor

What do you bring to the table that you believe the council has been lacking?

I think the council has been lacking communication with the taxpayers of Ellerbe. Communication is key to operating any type of business or public office and this is what I plan on doing if elected mayor of Ellerbe.

What three major changes would you propose to policies, events or infrastructure?

Being a business owner who experienced first hand what the 73/74 bypass did to my own business and being a resident in the town of Ellerbe I have witnessed the hard-ships small businesses in Ellerbe have suffered. As a taxpayer and potential Mayor of Ellerbe, I would like to see all the citizens of Ellerbe unite to promote Ellerbe as an attractive, clean town with lots to offer for those traveling the new bypass. The Rankin Museum, antique shops, thrift shops, three restaurants, hunting preserves, & local farm fresh produce are all worthy of recognition.

Provide an example of a time when you demonstrated leadership?

I demonstrate leadership skills daily by operating my own business, The Berry Patch of 20 years with 25 employees. I am also a board member for the Richmond County Farm Service Agency, board member of the North Carolina Strawberry Growers Association, and an Elder at McLean Presbyterian Church.

How do you plan to make sure the taxpayers’ money is spent wisely?

Concerning the taxpayer’s money, I intend to voice the concerns of the fellow taxpayer’s of Ellerbe to the council during town meetings. I want to be the voice of the taxpayer’s of Ellerbe.

I am a proud citizen of Ellerbe. My wife & I have chosen to raise our three children here. I am eager to help clean up Ellerbe, help bring unity in the community & help bring in more revenue for the town of Ellerbe if elected Mayor of Ellerbe.

Lee Freeman, mayor

What do you bring to the table that you believe the council has been lacking?

I bring a different approach to everyday problems and needs in town.

What three major changes would you propose to policies, events or infrastructure?

I really can`t propose anything at this time.I have been in state government and if it taught me anything it is don`t be overbearing on others and hear when they speak to you. Never treat anyone like they are beneath you and show respect.

Provide an example of a time when you demonstrated leadership?

I have been the lead person for all safety training and making sure all standard operating procedures are followed. I lead by following laws and procedures and let others see that you don`t cut corners.

How do you plan to make sure the taxpayers’ money is spent wisely?

I spend it like its mine, because it is.

Robert C. Hough, mayor

What do you bring to the table that you believe the council has been lacking?

I believe because I have own and operated a business for over 30 years in Ellerbe. Along with the fact that I am the only candidate running for mayor that has served on the city council. Has given me more insight on ongoing problems and some of the leadership issues.

What three major changes would you propose to policies, events or infrastructure?

Three change I would like to propose would be Maintenance and up keep on sidewalks. Water and sewer system properly maintained, along with more leniency of fees and penalties imposed on the pubic.

Provide an example of a time when you demonstrated leadership?

Two terms on the city council, also served as Ellerbe police commissioner.

How do you plan to make sure the taxpayers’ money is spent wisely?

By my daily involvement and working closely with the towns different departments will allow me to oversee and prevent any potential over sites. Assuring that our tax payer money is utilized to it fullest!

Bennett Hawks, mayor

What do you bring to the table that you believe the council has been lacking?

As the youngest candidate for mayor of Ellerbe, I bring a unique perspective. While I have an appreciation for the history of Ellerbe and also the present, my ideas are geared towards the future as I plan to live and raise my family here. I would like to seek the interest of all the citizens of Ellerbe and work along with the council in developing a short and long range plan for the growth and welfare of Ellerbe.

What three major changes would you propose to policies, events or infrastructure?

I want Ellerbe to capitalize on our agricultural industries and our natural resources in and around Ellerbe. I want to improve on our parks and recreation organization and bring attention to our hunting sports businesses to make Ellerbe an attractive place to live and visit. I want to find ways to make Main Street more attractive to inducive to businesses. Ellerbe is a great place and has the potential to be even better.

Provide an example of a time when you demonstrated leadership?

As mayor of Ellerbe, I will draw from skills learned while working in our family building business, such as working with others and compromising with others to accomplish the goals set to complete any set project.

How do you plan to make sure the taxpayers’ money is spent wisely?

I will be sure that any monies or other resources will be spent wisely to benefit the people as a whole. I will look for ways to eliminate any waste and try to broaden our tax base and reduce fees and taxes to as low as possible.
