The Rockingham Police Department could not determine who was at fault in a Friday afternoon collision on U.S. Route 220 at the intersection of Lee Street.

Mitchell E. Jones, 51, of Pilot Mountain, was traveling in a 2005 Toyota in the right lane of northbound U.S. Route 220. At the same time, Mary Chavis, 47, of Ellerbe, was traveling north in the righthand lane.

According to a report filed by Officer J.A. Lampley, “due to conflicting stories, I was unable to determine what happen(ed). There was no point to determine where the collision took place in the roadway.”

According to Jones,he felt “something make contact with the right rear side of his vehicle.” The collision, Jones said, forced his vehicle into the lefthand lane, nearly causing him to drive on top of the median.

Chavis, however, countered that Jones was already in the left land and then, she said, Jones “side swiped her, pushing her off the road” and up an embankment.

Jones did not require medical attention. Chavis initially declined medical treatment but later indicated a family member might take her to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital.
