LAURINBURG — A 25-year-old Laurinburg man has been charged with beating his girlfriend to death with his bare hands following a Sunday night argument, according to the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office.
Brian Lynn Mishue, of 11700 Quail Ridge Road, is being held without bond in the Scotland County jail in the death of Geneva Smith, also 25 and of the same address, according to sheriff’s Capt. Jon Edwards.
He has been charged with an open count of murder. The district attorney’s office will determine whether Mishue will face a first- or second-degree murder charge.
According to a sheriff’s report by Deputy Andre Grant, authorities received an urgent call to the couple’s home at 9:20 p.m. Sunday. Mishue himself called 911, Edwards said.
Smith was found in the home’s backyard, Edwards said. Scotland County paramedics administered CPR as she was being taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Edwards said it does not appear that Mishue had used a weapon “other than his hands and fists.”
“They got into a heated altercation that actually started in Robeson County,” Edwards said, adding that the couple had been using drugs and drinking while spending time with friends.
Edwards said Smith, who was from Robeson County, had moved in with Mishue about a year ago.
Smith went by Geneva Mishue on Facebook, listing herself as having married Brian Mishue on Nov. 3 of last year. According to her profile, she was a registered nurse who had attended the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
Brian Mishue attended Scotland High School and Sandhills Community College, according to his Facebook page.
