HAMLET — Police are searching for two people accused of breaking into an apartment after a teenage suspect was arrested in the Thursday theft.
Hamlet police and Richmond County sheriff’s deputies rushed to the scene of a reported June 10 break-in at Taylor Place Apartments on N.C. 177 North. A deputy spotted the suspect vehicle near the apartment complex and stopped it after a short chase.
Darien McNair, 17, of Rockingham was found with some of the stolen items, mostly electronics, in the car, interim Hamlet police Chief Rodney Tucker said. Police returned the recovered items to the owner.
Police charged McNair with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering and possession of burglary tools.
The sheriff’s office charged McNair with felony fleeing and eluding arrest with a motor vehicle. He was placed in the Richmond County Detention Center under an $8,000 secured bond.
Two additional suspects are believed to have run away and remain at large, possibly with stolen items that were not found with McNair at the time of his arrest, according to Tucker.
Anyone with information regarding the suspects’ identities and whereabouts is asked to call Richmond County Crime Stoppers at 910-997-5454 or the Hamlet Police Department at 910-582-2551.
