ROCKINGHAM — Sometimes with the Richmond County Daily Journal’s promotions, it’s best to just be in the right place at the right time. That was the case for 29-year-old Tripp Potterfield of Ellerbe, who found the Golden Seashell behind the town’s welcome sign.
Just past the Dollar General entering Ellerbe, Potterfield said he stumbled upon the shell last Saturday morning by accident.
“I’d heard people talking about it, but I was actually out geocaching that morning,” he said. “There’s a little cache in an old film canister that used to be behind that sign. I didn’t find it, but it still shows as active, and I was rooting around in the bushes, and (the shell) was sitting there.”
After taking it home, Potterfield asked his wife if the seashell in his possession was the one everyone had been talking about, to which she gave him a resounding, “Yeah.”
Potterfield had heard through the newspaper and word of mouth about the promotion and said he thought it sounded “kinda neat,” but with his wife and mother-in-law in Florence, South Carolina, for a girls’ day, it gave him the chance to ride around town looking for geocaches.
Since Potterfield is working in Charlotte and has been driving back and forth for the last two months, he hasn’t had the time to bring the seashell back to the Daily Journal until Friday, but he’s already got smart plans for the $500 cash prize.
“I know a chunk of it’s going into savings,” he said, “and then the rest is buying my wife’s birthday present.”
