LUMBERTON — A Hamlet woman was killed Sunday after a vehicle she was riding in struck a utility pole on Pine Street in Lumberton, according to the Lumberton Police Department.

Tabitha Daniell Benton, 30, of Jordan Court in Hamlet, was riding in a 2005 Toyota when it ran off the road and struck a utility pole near the intersection of Pine and 12th streets, said Maj. Tommy Barnes of the Lumberton Police Department.

Alcohol appears to have been a factor in the wreck. Charges could be filed against the driver of the Toyota, 51-year-old Katrina Grant, of Orange Street in Lumberton, pending the results of a blood test, Barnes said.

Benton’s funeral is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Outreach for Jesus in Hamlet, according to her obituary. Family visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
