The May Primary Election is today, as voters across the state cast ballots for a number of government offices, and on one proposal.

Richmond County residents will be casting votes for a wide range of offices, from U.S. House of Representatives to State Senate and down to local races for the Richmond County Board of Commissioners and the Richmond County Board of Education.

Voters statewide will decide if they are for or against an amendment being made to the North Carolina State Constitution which would allow the state to only recognize a legal civil union between a man and a woman. This is identified as a Constitutional Amendment under Referendum on the ballot.

One Stop Voting for the 2012 May Primary Election in began April 19 and extended until May 5.

At the start of One Stop Voting, there were 30,233 voters registered in Richmond County, with 19,205 registered Democrats, 5,205 Republicans and 24 Libertarians. There are 5,799 voters unaffiliated with any party.

According to the Board of Elections, there are 9,705 black registered voters in the county and 19,522 white registered voters. Richmond County has more female than male voters, with 16,480 female voters and 13,639 male voters. The Marks Creek precinct #2 has the most registered voters, with 5,374.
