The Richmond County Rescue Squad is hosting its fourth annual barbecue plate sale on Friday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Sandhill Boys barbecue team started slow-roasting Boston butts on Wednesday at the East Rockingham Fire Department.
“We really appreciate the East Rockingham Fire Department letting us do all the cooking over there,” said Jason Smith, rescue squad captain. “And the Sandhill Boys were good enough to cook the barbecue for us again this year.”
The Sandhill Boys chopped up 700 pounds of barbecue for the plate sale, seasoned with their homemade sauce.
“We need these fundraisers to help keep our organization alive,” said Scott Waters, volunteer rescue chief. “We have about 40 volunteers with our rescue organization, but the funds are used to purchase equipment and keep up our building maintenance.”
Barbecue or grilled chicken will also be on the menu; Perdue Farms donated 250 birds to the group.
“Our pre-sells are looking pretty good already,” said Waters.
According to Smith, the Richmond County Rescue Squad serves areas around the county like: parts of Roberdell; Rockingham; parts of Northside; and near the Pee Dee River.
“These fundraisers are really important, and help us get the things we need to serve the community,” said Smith.
The plate sale will be dine in or carry out, and the rescue squad building is located at 1004 Rockingham Road. Plates of five or more can be delivered. All plates will be served with baked beans, slaw, a roll and dessert. For more information, call 910-895-9516 (if the fax machine picks up, try the number again).
