JACKSON SPRINGS — A driver was trapped in the cab of his log truck after it slammed into a car and flipped onto its side Wednesday, state troopers said.
Larry David Thomas, 60, of Nooe Hill Road, Troy, was airlifted to University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill after firefighters freed him from the crumpled cab. Trooper Josh Talley of the N.C. Highway Patrol said his injuries were serious but did not appear to be life-threatening.
“He was conscious and alert,” Talley said, “but he was in obvious pain.”
The wreck happened when a car driven by 27-year-old David Michael Rubinstein of Wittstock Drive, Charlotte, pulled out in front of Thomas’ 2007 Peterbilt tractor-trailer at the intersection of Pooles Mill and Windblow roads near the Richmond-Montgomery county line, Talley said.
Rubinstein was driving west on Poole Farm Road and failed to yield the right of way to the oncoming log truck, Talley said.
Rubinstein’s car burst into flames after the crash, but Talley said the driver walked away from the wreckage.
“It was fully involved,” Talley said. “It pretty much burned completely up.”
Paramedics took Rubinstein to Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst as a precaution.
The posted speed limit at the intersection is 55 mph, and Talley estimated the collision speed at 40 mph.
Talley said neither driver had any passengers in their vehicles.
The narrow two-lane roads were closed at the Pooles Mill-Windblow intersection as first responders worked the scene. Logs from the truck’s trailer blocked portions of both lanes on Windblow Road.
First responders from Montgomery and Richmond counties rushed to the scene of the 11 a.m. crash, which happened about a mile inside rural Montgomery County.
Candor firefighters were joined by Montgomery County Emergency Medical Services, FirstHealth EMS, Candor police and sheriff’s deputies from Richmond and Montgomery counties.
Marked and unmarked sheriff’s cruisers lined the grassy median on Pooles Mill Road along with a collection of cars and trucks belonging to volunteer firefighters.
Talley said the crash remained under investigation Wednesday afternoon. Barring a change in Thomas’ condition, he said Rubinstein would likely be cited for unsafe movement.
