ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior softball team will march into the state 4A playoffs undefeated, but its 25th win didn’t come easy.
Richmond rallied to score three runs in the fifth to pull out a 4-2 victory over Pinecrest in the Southeastern Conference tournament final Friday night.
The Patriots scored twice against Summer Jacobs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead before the Raiders got things rolling in the bottom of the fifth.
Doodle Jacobs led off with a single and Ashton Davenport followed with a bunt single. Summer Jacobs grounded into a fielder’s choice as Pinecrest tagged Doodle Jacobs out trying to advance to third. Jessica Steen singled to right as Davenport raced home to tie the game. After Katie Satterfield struck out, Chelsea Davis reached safely on an error that allowed courtesy runner Kelsey Mabe and Steen to score. Hunter Parks popped out to end the threat.
Summer Jacobs settled down and held Pinecrest’s offense in check the rest of the way to earn the win in the pitching circle. She allowed five hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out four.
Doodle Jacobs, Davenport and Steen all had two hits for the Raiders in the victory.
“The girls have worked hard and met three big goals this year,” Richmond coach Wendy Wallace said. “Winning the regular season (championship), the conference tournament and being 25-0. We will enjoy it this weekend, but it starts over Monday and we will have to get back to work to prepare for the state playoffs.”
Richmond will open the postseason 7 p.m. Wednesday at home against the No. 4 seed out of the Greater Neuse River Conference. The Raiders will maintain home-field advantage throughout the playoffs until it faces another team that is also unbeaten. If that were to occur, then the home team would be decided by a coin flip.
Pinecrest, the No. 2 team out of the SEC, will battle the No. 3 seed from the Mideastern Conference in the opening round.
