RMS Science Olympiad team takes 3rd in regional tourney

Rockingham Middle School’s Science Olympiad teams traveled on Saturday to St. Andrew’s University in Laurinburg to participate in the NCSO regional competition.

The two teams, guided by seventh grade science teacher Kristie Wikane, competed against nine other schools from seven counties in 23 different STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) events.

The 13 members of the varsity team brought home four first-place medals, five second-place medals, three third-place medals as well as the third place overall trophy. Students on the school’s varsity team include Mason Bailey, Caleb Brewer, Peyton Harrelson, Kylie McDonald, Ben Morrison, Matthew Newton, Yash Patel, Skylar Ramsay, Joseph Ruperd, Braxton Talbert, Noah Wallace, Austin Watson and Kiera Weatherford.

For the varsity team, Talbert and Patel took first in Sound of Music, while Patel and Ramsay won Experimental Design honors. Morrison and Wallace earned first place in Road Scholars while Harrelson and Ruperd took first in the Duct Tape Challenge.

The nine members of Rockingham Middle’s junior varsity team brought home eight first-place medals. Students on the junior varsity team include Faith Baxley, Alex Branch, Julianna Chapman, Kaleb Douglas, Devin Grant, Dustin Hillenburg (not pictured), Chloe O’Neal (not pictured), Trey Singleton and Mac Wadsworth.

Wadsworth took first in Experimental Design, while Hillenburg won Boomilever and Grant won in Dynamic Planet. In two-person teams, Singleton and Baxley took first in Metric Mastery, Hillenburg and Chapman won in Water Quality, Chapman and Baxley won in Disease Detectives, Singleton and Wadsworth won in Entomology and Branch and O’Neal won in Write it.

All first place medalists have been invited to N.C. State University in Raleigh on April 25 and April 26 to compete at the State Science Olympiad Tournament.
