FAYETTEVILLE — The Richmond Senior softball team rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh and scored four times in the eighth inning to knock off Jack Britt 8-4 Friday night.
Doodle Jacobs, who was 4 for 4 in the game, singled to open the seventh for the Raiders. Ashton Davenport doubled to score Doddle Jacobs. After a ground out, Davenport moved to third on Jessica Steen’s ground ball to shortstop. Katie Satterfield plated Davenport with a single to tie the game at 4.
Jennifer Steen and Haleigh Denham got the rally started in the eighth inning with back-to-back singles. Doodle Jacobs walked to load the bases. Davenport grounded into a fielder’s choice, but Taylor Davis (running for Jennifer Steen) scored on the play. Denham raced home on a passed ball before Summer Jacobs knocked home Doodle Jacobs with a single. Jessica Steen closed out the scoring with a single to plate Davenport.
Summer Jacobs picked up her second win of the season, hurling a complete game. She allowed four hits, one walk and one earned run.
“We hit the ball really well tonight,” Richmond coach Wendy Wallace said. “We always had people on base. We made a couple of mistakes in the field but with the way we hit the ball, we will score a lot of runs.”
Richmond (2-0) will return to the field 2 p.m. today at Eastern Randolph.
Raiders lose season opener
MARSHVILLE — The Richmond girls soccer team was unable to find the back of the net in a 1-0 loss at Forest Hills Friday night.
After a scoreless first half, Forest Hills broke into the scoring column with a goal in the opening eight minutes of the second. Richmond coach Bennie Howard said his team lost possession of the ball in its defensive end that led to the game’s only goal.
The Raiders (0-1) had two opportunities late in the game to tie the score but came up empty. Cherie Ellerbe had a mini-breakaway but her shot was turned away by the Forest Hills’ goalie. Moments later, Cassie McFayden fired a shot from outside the penalty box, but the ball was safely punched away.
“It’s not the way I wanted to start the season,” Howard said. “We get them at our place on Wednesday and I hope to return the favor.”
The rematch with Forest Hills is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday.
