Republican Tom McInnis filed on Tuesday for his candidacy in the race for the North Carolina Senate District 25 seat against Democrat Sen. Gene McLaurin.
District 25 includes Anson, Richmond, Scotland, Stanly counties and a portion of Rowan County. The seat is a two-year term and the annual salary is $20,700.
McInnis, 59, of Ellerbe, said in a Jan. 9 news release that announced his candidate that his campaign will focus on “high-quality, 21st century schools and more abundant and prosperous job opportunities.”
“I have been involved in improving our local schools as a member of the Richmond County school board since 2006,” McInnis said. “During this time, I have come to realize that our most serious education challenges stem from bureaucracy in Raleigh and Washington D.C. We need the ability to make local decisions for local schools. We need more choices for families and students. We need to support great teachers by letting them do their jobs, and we need to reduce the amount of unnecessary testing.
The candidate filing period ends at noon on Feb. 28. The 2014 Primary Election is May 6 and the General Election is Nov. 4.
