Raiders win four straight to finish second

WADESBORO — The Richmond Senior wrestling squad had its best finish in a multi-school event this season by taking second place on Saturday in the Cat Fight Tournament at Anson High School.

Richmond fell in its opening match to East Rowan (53-30) but reeled off four straight victories against Anson (54-27), Butler (42-36), Purnell Swett (42-33) and St. Pauls (60-24).

Gary Blue and Dalton Faurot were both 5-0 during the event. Blue went 3-0 with two pinfall victories in the 132-pound class and was 2-0 with two pinfall wins at 126. Faurot recorded four pins and earned a win by forfeit in the 170-pound division.

Versean Washington also went undefeated. He went 3-0, all by forfeit. He earned two wins in the 113-pound class and another at 106.

Gerald Bethea, Zavier Covington and Jordan Jenkins registered four wins in their five matches. Bethea notched three pinfall victories and another by forfeit at 220. All of Covington’s contests were decided by pins in the 182-pound division. Jenkins went 3-1 with two pinfall wins at 106 and won his other match by pinning his opponent at 113.

David Watkins was 3-1 in the 285-pound class, but only hit the mat twice. Watkins pinned Marcus Warren from East Rowan before losing a decision in double overtime against Vdail Polk of Anson. He received two forfeit victories.

Maleik Rush was the only other Richmond wrestler to have a winning mark in the tournament. Rush was 3-2 and all of his matches were decided by pinfalls.

Richmond will return to action this weekend when it travels to Franklinville to participate in a tournament hosted by Providence Grove.
