RALEIGH — Teryn Savage grew up watching his big brother Kasheem Reid fly around the field making big play after big play at Raider Stadium.
Savage thought one day he would be able to don and green and gold just like his brother, but that ended when his family moved to Cary just as he was about to enter ninth grade.
After spending his freshman year playing for the Imps, Savage transferred to Athens Drive this season and his ability on the gridiron is beginning to attract the attention of some big-time schools. Savage is receiving letters from Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Ohio State as well as several others.
“I went to a lot of camps this summer and they saw what I could do,” Savage said. “Then on Aug. 1 all of these colleges started emailing my parents and calling me. I took my first unofficial visit on Aug. 31 to Clemson to watch the Clemson-Georgia game.”
Savage added he isn’t leaning towards one school but has frequent conversations with Jeff Scott from Clemson, Kentucky’s Tommy Mainord and Fred Jackson from Michigan. He plans to make a verbal commitment next year as a junior so “I don’t have to go through all that my senior year.”
Savage, who stands 6 feet 2 inches and weighs 185 pounds, is mainly being recruited to play on the offensive side of the ball, but could easily slide over to defense if he continues to grow and add weight.
“He’s a good athlete with a good frame,” said Michael Clark, who handles recruiting for North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia for Scout.com. “I like him more at outside linebacker because he has good range and instincts.”
Clark added if Savage stays at wide receiver, he sees him playing on the outside rather than the slot.
Savage will have busy end of the year with a trips to Orlando, Fla. and San Antonio in the works.
He was named an Offense-Defense All-American while attending one of its camps this summer and earned an invitation to the eighth annual Offense-Defense Bowl Week in from Dec. 31 to Jan. 2 in Florida.
After completing the activities in Orlando, Savage will head to the U.S. Army National Combine in San Antonio which is scheduled from Jan. 2 to 4.
