Pops Fowler turns some Boston butts on the grill Wednesday in preparation for the annual pork and chicken fundraiser that nets the East Rockingham Fire Department between $6,000 and $8,000 each year. More than a dozen grills were lit early Wednesday. Here, Fowler roasts on the new Hogzilla, jointly funded and owned by the all-volunteer firefighting force and the Hamlet-based Sandhill Boys BBQ Cooking Team.

The fundraiser begins Friday at 11 a.m. at the fire department, located on Airport Road. Firefighters expect to serve more than 2,400 customers and dish out more than 3,000 pounds of meat. Plates are $7 apiece and include your choice of meat, plus cole slaw and hush puppies and baked beans.
